In conversation with a Japanese kimono dealer in 2006, Alan first came to hear of pure fine silver in clay form (Art Clay Silver), which is manufactured in Japan. An Internet search led to a life-altering discovery when Alan subsequently took classes in the crafting of jewellery and sculpture using silver clay. The attraction was immediate. A world of possibilities opened and a passion was born.
While fine silver (Art Clay Silver) forms the basis of much of his work, bronze, copper and gold is also used. Alan also combines paper porcelain, Egyptian paste and paté de verre in his art pieces. Found items, such as porcupine quills picked up in the wild, ancient Egyptian faience beads and even antique Japanese netsuke and ojime beads also make an appearance in his work. A love of phenomenal stones is evident in the regular use of stones exhibiting asterism and other optical effects.
Most of Alan’s jewels and sculptures are mounted, with most of the art pieces incorporating removable elements that may be worn. Inspiration is derived from history, nature, poetry and music.
