Claire Waters
The Sacred Ibis has long been a favourite image for me. My influences and inspiration come from plant and animal life, indigenous and ancient art, craft and ornament. The plight of our planet and human tolerance and responsibility in cohabiting with our nonhuman fellows is currently a major focus.

A paperclay workshop at Ceramic South Africa’s annual Clayfest in 2008 inspired me to return to working in clay. I have been experimenting since, using inclusions such as paper, fabric, plant matter and dung. My work is hand built. I also paint and draw.

I have no formal training and ran my own graphic design business for 20 years and now work full-time from my studio space with Twilsharp Studios in Bertrams, Johannesburg. Mentorship and workshop programs with John Shirley and CSA have supplemented my ceramic knowledge. I have exhibited on Regional and National exhibitions organized by Ceramics SA, as well as various group art and ceramic exhibitions.
