Gavin Cox

Gavin has been working in clay since 2009. Their small family studio is an integral part of their home on the outskirts of East London.

Captivated by the opportunities presented by alternative firing methods, Gavin’s creative process typically culminates in a pit or saggar of some description. His work tends decorative rather than functional, larger rather than smaller, and experimentation is the order of the day. The smoke-firing and/or flame-painting on the smooth terra sigillata (burnished) prepared surfaces produce organic, dynamic and intriguing results. The dawning of 2015 has heralded the construction of a small updraft brick-shelled fibre-lined kiln that will be gas-fired to the desired temperatures in order to facilitate Gavin’s saggar-esque approach to firing his work.
